Hi! We’re Katy and Eugene, filmmakers who simplify video production to help brands that care grow.
You’ve probably heard that storytelling is key to making your brand stand out, but knowing where to start or how to structure your story can feel overwhelming. We get it, there’s a lot of noise out there. Big brands shouting the loudest, cat videos flooding your feed. But the organizations and brands doing real, meaningful work? Their stories often get lost.
That’s why we love Pixar’s 8-step storytelling framework, it’s simple and clear.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through how to create a storytelling video using this framework, breaking down each step with tips and an example from a nature-focused brand. Whether you’re making a brand video, social media clip, or a longer documentary-style film, this guide will help you craft a compelling story.
Pixar is famous for crafting some of the most emotionally engaging films ever made. They use an 8-step storytelling structure that’s simple and effective and it translates perfectly into video for brands and organizations.
Here’s the framework:
1. Once upon a time...Introduce your hero, your brand, a person, or a community.
2. Every day...Show their everyday life or the status quo before change.
3. Until one day...Reveal the problem or event that disrupts life.
4. Because of that...Explain the immediate consequences or struggles.
5. Because of that...Show how the situation escalates.
6. Because of that...Build up toward the turning point or solution.
7. Until finally...Reveal the solution or transformation.
8. And ever since that day...Show how things have improved or what’s next.
1. Once Upon a Time
Start with an engaging introduction. Use beautiful, authentic footage that sets the scene, the place, people, or brand at the heart of your story. Think about who your “hero” is and what makes them special.
2. Every Day
Show your hero’s world before the change. This helps your audience understand the stakes and builds empathy. Include everyday sounds and visuals to make it feel real.
3. Until One Day
Introduce the problem or event that triggers the story’s conflict. This moment creates tension and hooks viewers.
4-6. Because of That (The Rising Action)
Use these steps to build your story’s emotional arc. Show the struggles, challenges, and stakes getting higher. Use close-ups, natural light, and authentic reactions to draw viewers in.
7. Until Finally
This is your story’s turning point — the moment your brand, product, or community brings change. Make it uplifting and visually impactful.
8. And Ever Since That Day
Close with a hopeful, forward-looking message. Show the benefits, improvements, and future possibilities your story creates.
Once upon a time, the land was overworked, and the soil was tired and lifeless.
Every day, farmers struggled to grow healthy crops, and the ecosystem was out of balance.
Until one day, a group of passionate farmers decided to try regenerative farming methods.
Because of that, they started planting diverse crops, rebuilding soil health, and nurturing wildlife.
Because of that, the farm began to flourish with vibrant plants, healthy animals, and clean water.
Because of that, the local community gained access to fresh, nutritious food and a renewed connection to the land.
Until finally, the farm became a thriving example of sustainability and hope for future generations.
And ever since that day, visitors come to learn, relax, and be inspired by the beauty of nature restored.
Not thinking about what your audience wants to see.
Trying to tell too many stories at once. Focus on one clear message or journey.
Ignoring emotional connection. Facts alone don’t move people; feelings do.
Not thinking about the hook at the beginning of your video.
Neglecting good visuals or sound. Quality production makes your story believable.
Use natural light where possible, it’s flattering and authentic.
Keep your camera steady or use simple stabilizers.
Capture ambient sounds and natural reactions for atmosphere.
Use simple editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or even free tools like DaVinci Resolve.
Plan your story before filming with a shot list.
Remember, a great storytelling video doesn’t end with the final cut. Plan how you’ll share it, social media, your website, email campaigns. Pair your video with a clear call to action, whether it’s visiting your website, donating, or sharing the story.
